L. Rene Abreo 2004 Distinguished Carr Scholarship Alumnus |
Rene enrolled at Angelo State University in the fall of 1985. He was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in the spring of 1989. Upon entering active duty,
he served as a communications/computer officer at the Command and Control Systems Center at Tinker AFB, Oklahoma developing and maintaining software-intensive strategic communications systems.
It was at Tinker that Rene became committed to furthering the state of the practice in software development. His work at Tinker led to an assignment at Scott AFB in Illinois where he joined a team responsible for introducing software engineering practices to the Air Force’s 40+ software development and maintenance organizations. While at Scott, he completed graduate work in software engineering and became certified by the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University to lead organizational assessments of software engineering practices. In 1994, he was selected from among dozens of nominees from across the nation to serve on the Advisory Board at the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) working to advise on and guide the development of the Institute’s best practices for software engineering.
Rene left the Air Force in 1997 when he was recruited by the Securities Industry Automation Corporation (SIAC) to improve the state of the practice in software engineering at their New York City facility. While at SIAC, he was instrumental in bringing improved practices and graduate software engineering education to the organization. Also while at SIAC, he was presented the Chairman’s Award for significant and lasting positive contributions to the organization, spoke at numerous gatherings and conferences to share lessons-learned, and published Software Requirements, A Practical Approach Using the Unified Process, a book on the practice of developing requirements for software systems. He currently serves as a Managing Director at SIAC with a focus on development of order management systems for the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange.
Rene’s wife of 15 years, Sandi, is a 1983 graduate of San Angelo Central High School. Along with their children, Michael age 11, and Alexandra age 9, they are active in their church, their community, scouting and the martial arts. Michael and Rene also love backpacking and recently started a mission their friend calls “The Ramble Across New York” where they’ll hike from the George Washington Bridge in New York City to Niagara Falls.
As profiled in the 2004 Fall Alumni Magazine.
