David Hirschfeld 1999 Distinguished Alumnus |
David Hirschfeld grew up in San Angelo and attended San Angelo College before
leaving for Texas Tech to complete his degree. In 1962, David graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and returned home to join the family owned business, now known as Hirschfeld Steel & Supply Inc. When he returned to San Angelo, Hirschfeld Steel had just five employees and annual sales of less than $50,000. Under his leadership and direction, the company now employs 800 people and annual sales are approximately $150 million. With the exception of his time in college and service in the U.S. Army, Hirschfeld has lived and worked in San Angelo.
David Hirschfeld's record of community service is long and distinguished. He has served as President of the West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind, West Side Optimist Club, and been honored as Optimist of the Year. Hirschfeld also served as Vice President and Chairman of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce and Director of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce. He served as Chairman of the Board of Appeals and Adjustments for the City of San Angelo for six years and currently serves on the Executive Board of the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and the Texas Association of Business.
Hirschfeld has served as Chairman of the Concho Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America, River Club, United Way of the Concho Valley, and has served on the Executive Board of the San Angelo Symphony and Salvation Army. Currently, Hirschfeld is a member of the Executive Board of Directors of the San Angelo National Bank, West Texas Community Health Network, and is Chairman of the San Angelo Health Foundation and the American Institute of Steel Construction.
David and his wife, Judith, have four children: David Jr., Shawnee Ingrum, Kendall, and Wendall. They have eight grandchildren, which he says will help continue the incredible success story of a company that started in a dirt-floored building and now carries the name of his remark-able family around the world.
Sande Harrison, Director of Alumni Relations at Angelo State University, has worked with Hirschfeld on numerous projects and says,"Don't think you can keep up with this dynamic man. His mind is razor sharp, his steps are quick, and his ideas are brilliant. Whatever David commits to do will get done ahead of schedule, efficiently, and with class. He has done so much for the people, charities, and organizations of West Texas. We are truly fortunate to call him one of our own."
As profiled in the 1999 Fall Alumni Magazine.
