His military staff experience includes serving as Chief, Division Plans, 13th Air Force, Andersen AFB, Guam; Chief, Division and Long Range Plans, Air National Guard Bureau, Headquarters, Pentagon; and Deputy Chief, Office of Military Cooperation, Kuwait City, Kuwait. Colonel Sosa has commanded the 11th Air Support Operations Squadron and Deputy Commander of the Air Support Group at Ft. Hood, Texas.
Colonel Sosa is currently the Director of Staff, 9th Air Force and U.S. Central Command Air Forces, Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina and has served in both OPERATION Enduring Freedom and OPERATION Iraqi Freedom. He coordinates and directs the daily management of the Commander Air Force Forces (COMAFFOR) staff and approves actions, orders, and plans when authorized by the Commander United States Central Command Air Forces (COMUSCENTAF). Moreover, he ensures COMUSCENTAF and COMAFFOR decisions and concepts are implemented by directing and assigning resources in support of the National Military Strategy. He formulates staff policy, reviews staff actions for adequacy and proper coordination, and ensures required liaison is established with supporting agencies and commands, host nations, United States Central Command Headquarters, and other service components.
Colonel Sosa, a Senior Navigator, has logged more than 2,000 hours in fighter and trainer aircraft. He has received many awards and decorations including the Bronze Star with one oak leaf cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with seven oak leaf clusters, and Combat Readiness Medal with three oak leaf clusters. He has also received the National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.
Jose and his wife, Delia (Gutierrez), ASU Class of 1976, have 2 children, Jason, 23, and Katherine, 19.
