Dr. Billy M. Jones
1979 Distinguished Alumnus
Dr. Billy M. Jones, former dean of students and professor and head of the history department at Angelo State University, has been chosen 1979 Outstanding Ex-Student by the Ex-Students Association.

Jones is president of Memphis State University, a post he has held since 1973. He will be recognized with other honorees at the Homecoming Luncheon October 20 in the Houston Harte University Center Ballroom.

A native of Abilene, Jones graduated from San Angelo Central High School and San Angelo College. At SAC he earned Junior College All-American honors as a football player.

He received a bachelor's degree from Vanderbilt University in 1950. Then came the beginning of a coaching and teaching career. For four years he coached and taught at Nashville's Hillsboro High School where he found time to complete his work for a master's degree at Peabody in 1952.

After an additional four years at Middle Tennessee State University, he returned to Texas to be assistant football coach under Jim Myers at Texas A&M University.

In 1959 he joined the faculty at San Angelo College as head of the history department and director of men's housing. He received the Ph.D. degree from Texas Tech University in 1963 and returned to Angelo State as history department chairman and dean of students.

During 1967-68 Jones was on leave at the University of Colorado where he participated in an academic internship. At ASU he also served as director of curriculum development during 1968-69. After his tenure at ASU, he served as president of Southwest Texas State University before moving to Memphis.

His numerous honors include 1967 Piper Professor of Texas, a fellow of the Texas State Historical Association and American Council on Education, the NCAA Silver Anniversary Award, Memphis' Outstanding Citizen of the Year in 1977, and Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame.

His memberships include the West Texas Historical Association Executive Council, National Education Association life member, Rotary International, and Church of Christ. Jones has authored five books and numerous articles.

He is married to the former Doris Hudson of San Angelo. The couple has four sons.
