Arnold Garcia, Jr., Class of 1973, is the Editorial Page Editor of the Austin American-Statesman and
a native of San Angelo, Texas.
Garcia began his newspaper career in 1968 as a general assignments reporter for the San Angelo Standard-Times. Drafted in 1969, he served two years in the U.S. Army. He returned from active duty and resumed his career at the Standard-Times where he remained until moving to the Austin American-Statesman as a courthouse reporter in 1974.
While at the Statesman, Garcia has been assigned to a variety of reporting and editing duties. As a reporter, he has covered state agencies, the prison system, and the Austin school district. In 1977, he was appointed an assistant city editor and also had assignments as editor and metro editor, responsible for the design and content of the local section. Immediately before becoming editorial page editor in 1991, Garcia wrote a column on local politics.
Garcia, 55, holds a bachelor’s degree in history and government from Angelo State University and did graduate work in the government department at the University of Texas. He is past president of the Headliners Club and a member of the board of governors of the Headliners Foundation, and also serves on the boards of the Crime Prevention Institute and Greater Austin Crime Commission. Garcia is also involved in the First Tee of Greater Austin. Garcia was a Pulitzer Prize juror in 2002 and chaired the Editorial Writing Pulitzer jury in 2003. He has served on the advisory committee to the mass communications department of Texas Tech University. Garcia and his wife, Linda, have two children, Jennifer Jetton, a medical student, and Teo Garcia, a high school junior.
