Dr. Kyle Longley
2005 Distinguished Carr Scholarship Alumnus
Kyle Longley graduated from Angelo State University Summa Cum Laude in 1987 with a bachelor's degree in history and mathematics. While attending ASU, Longley received the Carr Scholarship for outstanding student-athlete, the Fasken Foundation Academic Scholarship, and the West Texas Historical Association Scholarship for outstanding student in history. He also served as the Phi Alpha Theta president from 1986 to 1987.

Upon graduation in May of 1987, he went on to continue his education at Texas Tech University where he received a master's degree in History and Comparative Literature in August of 1989. During his time at Texas Tech, Longley was a teaching assistant and served as an academic advisor for women's athletics from 1988 to 1989. He was also awarded the David Vigness Scholarship in Latin American history in 1988. Once again, he served as the Texas Tech Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta president from 1988 to 1989.

After receiving his master's degree, Longley received his Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky in history in December of 1993. Longley continued his accomplishments at the University of Kentucky being awarded the A.D. Kirwan Scholarship for outstanding graduate student in history in 1992. He also served on the graduate council dissertation year fellowship from 1991 to 1992. Longley also received the Harry S. Truman Foundation Travel Grant in January of 1992 as well as the Franklin Roosevelt Foundation Travel Grant in April of 1992. Longley stayed involved by being a member of the Symposium Committee on "Perspectives on the Chinese Democracy Movement of 1989," was a graduate representative on department of history speaker selection committee, and was the president of the History Graduate Student Association from 1990 to 1992.

After completing his studies at the University of Kentucky, Longley was a visiting assistant professor of history from 1993 to 1994. Longley then became a visiting assistant professor of history from 1994 to 1995 where he was awarded the Citadel Development Foundation Grant December of 1994.

Since 1995, Longley has continued to teach at Arizona State University as an associate professor of history where he is the Snell Family Dean's Distinguished Professor and director of graduate studies. Longley has been awarded the Faculty Development Grant (1995), Moody Fellowship, Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation (1995), College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Research Grant (1996), Franklin D. Roosevelt Foundation travel grant (1996), College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Travel Grant (1997), College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Research Award (1999), Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation Grant (2001), and the A.B. Thomas Book Award for outstanding book published in 1997 on Latin American Studies by the Southeastern Council on Latin American Studies.

Currently, he serves as the chair for the department of history, Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate, Chair of the Department Seven-Year Review Committee, Chair of Department of History Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, and is a member of the Department of History Graduate Admissions
