Adree Lakey: National Champion, Again

Saturday, May 24, 2008

Angelo State junior thrower Adree Lakey found new heights for the Rambelle track & field program on Saturday as she became the school's first-ever multiple national champion, winning the discus throw on the final day of the 2008 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Walnut, Calif.

Last season, Lakey became just the eighth female national champion in school history as she claimed the title in the hammer throw.

Sitting in fourth place after the preliminary round, Lakey stepped up with her second throw in the finals with a launch of  personal best throw of 161-7 to bolt into the lead and pull off her second national championship in as many seasons. The throw was the eighth-best in ASU history. The Sylvester native will return home as a three-time All-American for the second consecutive season, also earning certificates in the shot put and the hammer throw on Friday. The junior is now seven-time All-American in her career.

In other action on Saturday, both men's relays garnered All-America honors. The foursome of junior Raymond Hickem, junior Richard Covington, freshman Brian Holik and junior Jeremy Jones placed eighth in both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays on Saturday.  In the 4x100 race, the foursome recorded a time of 41.30 while the Rams ran the 4x400 event in 3:13.05.
