Legislation to align Angelo State University with the Texas Tech system was signed into law by Govenor Rick Perry on May 23, 2007. House Bill 3564m by Rep. Drew Darby (R) of San Angelo and co-sponsorsed by Senator Robert Duncan (R) of Lubbock had passed previously through the House with a 137-4 vote and the Senate unanimously. It will go into effect on September 1, 2007.
Texas Tech System has publicly announced that 1) Angelo State University would maintain its name, it's mascot and its colors; 2) the ASU Carr Scholarship would continue being specific to ASU students; 3) ASU bond obligations would become TTU System's obligations; and 4) tuition wouldn't increase more under the Tech System than it would in any other circumstances.
Angelo State University stands to benefit from Texas Tech possible academic and research alliances. In turn, Texas Tech has the chance to align with a premier undergraduate institution that shares its West Texas values.
