In 1925, San Angelo voters passed a $250,000 bond issue to erect a junior college. Organized as part of the SAISD, the two-year college was located on the southwest corner of North Oakes and East Second streets, across from the current Central Freshman campus.

San Angelo Junior College opened in the fall of 1928. 112 applicants were admitted and Reece Albert was the first to register. Tuition was $75.00 for city residents and $150.00 for non-residents. Students could rent rooms in the community for $15-$25 per month double occupancy and could take meals in the SAC cafeteria for $20 a month.

First commencement was in May 1929 and honored six graduates.

Name changed to San Angelo College in 1932.

San Angelo College was relocated to its new 55-acre campus on West Avenue N in 1948.Today, Angelo State University encompasses a 268-acre campus, 13 Academic & Administrative Facilities, 10 Service Facilities, 13 Athletic and Recreational Areas, and 7 occupied Residence Halls.

Throughout its first 25 years (1928-1953), San Angelo College had enrolled a total of 7,327 students and 1,024 of those had received their degrees. Today, each semester enrolls over 6,000 students and more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees are conferred each academic year.

In 1965, the name changed to Angelo State College.

By 1967, Angelo State College had 2,556 students enrolled and 111 faculty members.

Angelo State’s first baccalaureate degrees were awarded in 1967. A memorial plaque with all 178 graduates’ names is housed in the Administration Building to commemorate the occasion.

Angelo State College became Angelo State University in 1969.

ASU’s Graduate School was created in 1970 and conferred its first master’s degrees in 1972.

Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 began the fall of 1971. Robert and Nona Carr gave gifts totaling more than $1 million to help establish the new program in a time when many universities were dropping their ROTC units because of anti-war sentiment in the wake of the Vietnam War.

The Robert G. and Nona Carr Foundation was established in 1978 to provide scholarships for “needy and worthy” students to attend ASU. Revenues from mineral and royalty interests in 16 Texas counties were to be deposited in a permanent endowment fund. The interest from that endowment fund would support the foundation and fund the Carr Scholarships. Today, the endowment has grown to more than $66.8 million dollars with more than $47.2 million awarded to undergraduate students since its beginning.

The first Carr Academic Scholarships, totaling some $350,000 were awarded in the fall of 1981. In 2006, approximately one in every six ASU students received more than $3 million in scholarships with $3,160 being the average amount an undergraduate student could receive each year.

In the 2005-2006 academic year, Angelo State University enrolled 6,265 students. 70% of the entering freshmen were ranked in the top half of their high school class. Currently, it employs 231 full-time faculty members, 164 who hold a doctorate degree. Making the teacher/student ratio an outstanding 1 teacher for every 19 students.

ASU’s approximately 6,300 students come from 211 of the state’s 254 counties. We attract students from 43 states and 22 foreign countries.

1,062 students graduated last year, 815 earned Bachelor’s degrees, 149 earned associate degrees and 98 earned their Masters.
